SCHOOL INCURSIONS

We love to come to schools and connect with students!

Classrooms should be encouraged to be curious, driven to see how they fit into the broader continuum of time, and inspired to explore what their archaeological footprint could be.

Everick Foundation wants our contribution to your classroom to be valuable and worthwhile.

Overview

Our content is developed to align with State and National curricula and incorporates hands-on activities to engage students. The Everick Foundation Education Program is taught by professional archaeologists.

Book a mini excavation, study the past through garbage or coins, or explore a topic discussion which encourages curiosity and critical thinking. Everick Foundation incursions come with everything supplied.

Learning Outcomes

  • Develop critical thinking skills

  • Encourage students to practice writing skills, collaborative problem solving, and group work

  • Synthesise sources of information on different scales

  • Illustrate what archaeology can tell us about the lives of people from the past

  • Examine the attitudes, beliefs and customs of different cultures

  • Evaluation of why archaeology and cultural heritage are important and what roles they play in today’s society

Topic based presentations

The Everick Foundation team can present on a number of topics (in person or online) and we are happy to work with teachers to align our visit to suit cross-curriculum priorities in History and Science units within Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) syllabi.

Our current topics are:

  • What is archaeology?

  • Aboriginal Australia

  • The ethics of human remains

  • Museum repatriation

  • Technology in archaeology

  • Science in Archaeology

  • Senior QCAA Ancient History topics such as Digging up the Past and Personalities in their Time

  • Maritime/underwater archaeology

Garbology

Archaeology is sometimes called ‘the science of rubbish’ - what does your garbage say about you?

Everick Foundation comes to your school and provide bags of modern-day garbage that have been sorted into specific household scenarios (e.g. share house, family with children, household with pets).

These bags of garbage are micro-sites that require the same investigative and analytical skills one would need on a real excavation. We address topics  of stratigraphy, relative dating methods, and primary and secondary source analysis.

Shoe box excavations

Give your students some hands-on experience with material culture. Everick Foundation conducts portable shoe box excavations in your classroom, where everyone becomes an archaeologist for a day!

This activity takes the class on a compressed archaeological journey from the formulation of research questions to excavation and artefact analysis.

Teachers

Suitable to be catered to either primary or secondary students.

Our fun and interactive presentations help students better engage with the content they are studying.

The topic based presentations reignite an excitement for learning and get students to question the way they think about the past.

The garbology and shoe box excavations provide practical hands-on learning and allow students to analyse different mediums of evidence for source analyses.
